When I took a pencil somewhere in 1997 after years long abstinence, it was
no more than an internet lurker's famous "I can beat this crap with my crap"
attitude. But after a few tries, looking at something remotely resembling
my intentions I have found that this is almost as enjoyable as programming
and definitely more safe and relaxing to CRT-worn eyes.
And thus, I still draw, not expecting a praise or a pat on the back, but
for a sheer fun of doing something not related to the survival. And this,
by definition, is art -
Art too bad to be ignored!

A hot welcome to AFF. An interesting coincidence: my first decent doodle and
my first flamewar at alt.fan.furry. So, here is a sketch of an unspecified
lynx, burned to the bone by a friendly bunch of folks. Sorry, a bit nostalgic.
Most probably, this is THE first thing I drew in 6 years since school.

|
An attempt to visualize a s'zirr. To be more precise, first one. Screwed it as
much as only I can. Usually I am dissatisfied with every and each picture I
draw, but this was "an exception and a fault" as soon as I took the pencil.
By coincidence, this is, as I remember, also the first time I have tried to
do shadows.
|
|
Second attempt on self portrait, this time a bit more in character. Pity I
don't remember, who's pun provoked this, but at least partly this was
inspired by everfunny Amara Pronovost and reverend uncle George (Lucas).
Doing X, eh?

1998
|
This was intended as a "thank You" gift to Shalian, first of my i-net friends
I have met in RL. To say the truth, I was really surprised with what this
picture become. Definitely not the thing I would call a "thank You".

A watercolor character drawing for Unci. Unfortunately, severely clipped due to original being of scanner-unfriendly size.

Once during a very late night tea "party" a strange image shot before my
eyes, which I immediately caught by a handy pencil on a kitchen table.
This is a more or less accurate copy of that illusion, a little lion named
Starry.
|
|
Starry instantly became my favorite, and in a short time my sketchbook was
filled with a number of his images. This is one of them, Starry singing atop
of my PC: It isn't just my right, even my left will be divine!

I have no memories about the time when I first got an idea of a small series
titled "We are no champions". But from that instance I knew exactly how those
pictures should look. The actual results are, as usual, totally screwed and
anathomically incorrect. Hopefully, by the time I will get to draw the last of
them, I will improve a bit. This is "Second", others are
"Wind",
"Bless"
and
"Master".

|
This is my long time friend Dixi with his imaginary cheetah mate (presented in
his tales in the "The city in the woods" storyline).
|
|
An exception from my rules, a really messy study of Kena from "The Totality".
Strangely, I was satisfied with how she turned out.

1999
|
Shuffling through sketches of 1998 I noticed absence of me myself,
emphasized by heaps of trial and error pictures of my friends. This, and an
excellent picture of Skunki drawn by Kyo ("Never let me down") added
together to this portrait of Ree, posing on something that looks like a famed
MiG-3 fighter.
|
|
The second try at "We are no champions" - "Wind". In my opinion - even worse
than the first one, and color definitely improves
nothing. Oh well, live and learn. Especially anathomy...
|
|
"Fed up with the circle of life, are we?" Once on IRC I was asked whether
"s'zirr" (my avatar species) are related to lioness Zira, a brand new prime
villain in TLK-II: Simba's pride. Here is my answer: no, they weren't. But now
they are... This was my FIRST attempt to color anything on a computer.
|
|
This is a personal consequence of all the mess furry fandom is.
Burned fur and spoogemongers, gas masks and condoms... No, as classic
has suggested: We will go the other way! We will go and get a life. If
You need one, we can fetch one for You! ;)

"Bless". This is the third image from "We are no champions" series.
I am a bit more satisfied with this one than with the previous.
|
|
Just two watercolors of random subjects. |
|
|
"Master". After long time of indecision, I finally took the pencil to draw
the last picture in the series. In my opinion, it came out surprisingly good.
|
This concludes the page of my old attempts to draw anything. Somewhere in the
year 2000 I understood, that there is no hope I will learn, how to draw, but
that's another page of life.
